Mechanical Pencil
Generative Artwork
This project consists of a series of 24×24 inch archival inkjet prints.
I wrote custom software to create these impossibly complex pencil drawings of elements from the natural world. The software pulls in hand-drawn sketches of specific details (a leaf, tree branches, pine needles, clouds) and creates a dynamic, randomized arrangement based on a series of predefined rules. As more and more sketches are layered onto the canvas, the individual objects get lost in the complexity of the emerging patterns and textures.
The final output retains the hand-drawn qualities of the original pencil sketch, blurring the line between the digital and the analog, between the machine and the human creator.
